Salman Khan of Khan Academy recently posited that the future of education will be about individual, self-driven access to content. I think he is half right. Our human communities are formed of complex webs of interlocking relationships. Without the social and emotional awareness required to form and tend these bonds, to heal and make them stronger, all the information in the world isn't going to make your life the rich and fulfilling experience it should be. The key to unlocking life's potential is language. If we can eloquently express how we think and feel and give others the space to do the same, we can build communities that support and sustain us. We can access the opportunities that are our birthright. Teachers need to foster that awareness in children and help them develop the skills that will enable them to pursue their passions individually and through learning communities - helping them to become autodidactic, Knowmadic, emotionally-aware and eloquent individuals capable of working in small, community-centered, project-based teams within the horizontally structured organisations of our rapidly evolving world. The future is now.
